Greenkeepers Report

Conditions have remained unusually dry and mild into November.  This has seen a prolonging of regular mowing and maintenance much later in the season than usual with an increase in disease pressure for sustained periods.

Leaf clearing is taking place on a daily basis, along with regular worm cast removal and bunker maintenance.

Due to the sustained disease pressure in recent weeks, liquid fungicides have been applied to greens and approaches.  With limitations imposed on fungicide use and the effectiveness of these products due to a reduction in volume of active ingredient, we are finding the efficacy of these applications diminished and short lived, I have applied a granular iron product to the surfaces to aid with resilience and turf health going into the winter.

Aeration of fairways, tees and approaches continues.

Rainfall

October           100.5mm         13 total days

November        23mm                 2 days

Annual total    721.5mm

Please enjoy your golf.

News Report

(Clive Hebden)

With a plethora of juniors maturing and leaving for Colleges in the United States one may have thought the junior section at Colchester Golf Club had been stripped of its talent.

Not so, Under the guidance of its new leader, Glenn Clark, the section is not only rebuilding but advancing.

For the first time in a few years the Club was able to enter a team in the Youth Shield (Handicap) competition. The comparatively inexperienced team did beat Frinton, eventually finalists, enroute to third place in their group.

Under the guidance of Nick Leppard, the Mini Super Sixes were able to retain the title of the which saw 10 juniors represent the club, many of whom now will make the step up to the main course during 2025.

Over half-term Ava Withnall entered a senior ladies competition for the first time and not only returned the best scoring card of the day with 39 points she also won Division Four from her 40 handicap.

With the help of the Club’s Professionals and the many adults helping them, next year will be one of opportunity  when the Juniors can progress positively in a safe environment. With their winter schedule including  classes on Rules, handicaps and course etiquette.

The ladies at the Club held Three Clubs and a Putter competition. Casting most of their clubs aside for the day and playing in teams of three with two scores counting, the ladies set off.

Scores in this format often reflect handicaps and this competition proved to be no different with the winners Lisa Free, Caroline Chambers and Liz Bainbridge scoring 70 points, winning after a countback from Carol Irvine, Fiona Rose and Liz Harrison.

Third placed on 69 points were Carla Holroyd, Bridget Whitworth and Gillian Whittle. With fourth place, scoring 68 points, were Romany Foster, Jenny Rose and Mary Jardine
