Competition Report

Simon Rippingale Secures Victory in Colchester Golf Club’s Victory Cup Qualifiers Medal.

Originally presented to the Club by its wartime Captain, ‘Brigger’ Potter, this competition began in 1945 as a men’s 36-hole medal. Over time, it has evolved into an open qualifier knockout, allowing all Club members to participate.  Rippingale, playing off 18 and this year’s Vets Captain, put in an excellent round of 66 nett.

The omens were there when he started with a birdie and followed up with a good par on the third. Another birdie on the 12 anchored his game and three pars on the closing holes cemented his top spot.

It wasn’t an easy win with Mandy Rix (12) pushing him all the way. Rix posted an impressive 67 nett, staying hot on Rippingale’s heels despite two costly double bogeys on the front nine. Her recovery was remarkable, with two birdies keeping her in contention. Six pars on the back nine showcased her skill, but ultimately, Rippingale proved unstoppable.

Heading a group of four on 69 nett was twenty-two handicapper Philippa Deman with Lee Smith, Tom Rothery and Iain Cruickshank losing out after the countback.

In all, sixteen players qualified for the knockout, with the final due to be played in September.

At the weekend Colchester hosted a Quadrangular Match between Frinton, Chelmsford and The Warren.

Frinton took the accolades with a total of 241 points.  Second placed Chelmsford on 234 points with The Warren on 233 and Colchester fourth on 225.

Best pair score of the day went to the Colchester pairing of Catherine Chick and Dan Connolly scoring 37 points.

Lynda Hilliard and Jenny McEvoy qualified in top spot in the Ladies McKenzie Foursomes Qualifying Medal with a score of 70.

Second place went to Amanda Anslow and Helen Lofthouse with Liz Harrison and Janet Tebbutt taking third. Initially played for in 1949 the top eight pairs in the competition progress to the knockout stages.

Shelley and Hilary Persent (16) squeezed into first place with 38 points in the Bank Holiday Mixed Competition.

Their card showed that they started the back nine with a no-return but with solid play before and after that the blemish was soon nullified.  There were three pairs scoring 37 points and placed second after the countback were Caroline and Lewis Chambers (19) who were left ruing their two no-returns.

Third after the countback were Bill and Mandy Rix (14) who played handicap golf after a no-score at the first. The third pair on 37 points were Andrew and Sue Patrick (22).
